Peterson: Pipe of the Year 2022 PSB Rua P-Lip (596/925) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-029-79928
An annual production since 1997, Peterson's Pipe of the Year is among the Irish marque's most highly anticipated limited releases. Collectors especially appreciate Peterson's convention of resurrecting vintage shapes from their archives, bringing iconic Peterson history to the modern stage, and 2022's version recreates the famous "14B" shape. Among Charles Peterson's first Patent designs, the "14B" is a distinctly antique bent Brandy, and it was Mark Twain's favorite shape; in fact, Twain's own "14B" remains on display at the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum in Hannibal, Missouri. The Pipe of the Year 2022 is the most historically accurate recreation of the "14B" since it was still in regular production: It showcases Charles Peterson's patented System engineering alongside a sterling silver military mount handcrafted by the workshop's renowned smiths, as well as Peterson's vintage space-fitting stems. These stems are still available in the Deluxe System series and are a distinctly Peterson innovation: They were "never intended to go quite home," the space between the mount and stem base gradually decreasing with prolonged use. The overall profile of the "14B" exemplifies the muscular shaping style for which Peterson is known, pairing a plump bowl to an extra-stout shank, while the full bend balances out the stummel's mass for a comfortable smoking posture. This particular Pipe of the Year 2022 is dressed in the Irish marque's Rua sandblast, vividly highlighting the briar's natural grain in a striking contrast stain and elegantly complementing the sterling silver mount.
Inspired by the madra rua, "red fox," of traditional Irish tales, Peterson's Rua finish is a crimson-and-black, contrast-stained sandblast. Not only is it the first of its kind from the Irish marque, it's also among the first from any pipe factory, with contrast stains almost exclusively seen across handmade artisan pipes. A contrast finish incorporates two different stain colors, and the labor-intensive, time-consuming process involves staining a pipe one color, sanding down or sandblasting the stummel, and then applying the second stain, with adequate time spent in between to allow each stain to fully settle into the briar. The result is a rich, two-toned motif that simultaneously reveals the briar's grain while also providing an intriguing, dramatic contrast between the two separate stains. As such, Peterson's Rua pipes capture an unparalleled aesthetic across Peterson's portfolio, bespeaking a deep commitment to quality craftsmanship and combining iconic Peterson shaping with modern finishing techniques. In 2019, Peterson overhauled its sandblasting process by adopting a more intimate, artisan-style setup that now allows the marque's craftsmen to sandblast pipes individually and with more control. This new process yielded such exceptional results that Peterson created a special stamp to further distinguish pipes that showed especially choice, grain-defining sandblasts: the PSB grade. While the Supreme is still the highest designation for Peterson's sandblasted pipes, the PSB stamp denotes sandblasted bowls of exceptional quality and character and remains a rare honor in its own right, with only 1% of Peterson's regular production pipes earning the designation. This is truly a special piece and represents Peterson's new standard for the sandblasted pipe.-Truett Smith
