Peterson: Sherlock Holmes Sandblasted Hansom P-Lip Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-029-113032

One of the more esoterically named shapes within Peterson's Sherlock Holmes Collection, the Hansom draws inspiration from the hansom cab, a single-horse drawn carriage designed by Joseph Hansom in 1834. An architect from York, Hansom prioritized speed and safety in his innovation, imbuing the cab with a low center of gravity so as to quickly and safely maneuver tight city corners. The carriage held two passengers, with the driver stood on the back, and was Sherlock's favorite mode of transport in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. Peterson's Hansom, or "XL26," shape pays homage to this vehicle and the Edwardian Era in general, which saw the hansom cab used to the greatest extent following Queen Victoria's death in 1901 until 1910, when her son and successor Edward VII passed. One of the most striking of all the Sherlock Holmes Collection shapes, the Hansom poises a Stack-like Bulldog bowl on the end of a robust diamond shank, the bowl tapering dramatically from below the high-set beadlines. The design calls to mind the tall posture of the hansom cab's driver, while the S-curve resembles the reins stretching from the horse to the back of the carriage. It's a bold and muscular shape, catering well to Peterson's signature aesthetic, and the name is especially fitting as the Sherlock Holmes Museum in London (on Baker Street, of course) boasts one of the only surviving examples of the hansom cab still in use today.

Peterson of Dublin and Sherlock Holmes have enjoyed an inextricable association ever since Basil Rathbone first picked up a Peterson pipe on the silver screen. Rathbone's 14-film portrayal of the intrepid detective lasted from 1939 to 1946, and Peterson's Sherlock Holmes collection has honored that relationship since 1987. Peterson introduced the series with a one-off design commemorating the 100th anniversary of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet, with more shapes released throughout the subsequent years, and the line has become a staple across the Irish marque's portfolio. Each pipe in the collection also showcases Peterson's exemplary silverwork — the firm being renowned for its application of sterling silver, with the factory's smiths having completed a years-long mentorship stewarded by Peterson's senior craftsmen. The Sherlock Holmes line boasts broad accent bands of the regal metal, etched with the collection's logo, contrasted here against a dark chocolate-stained sandblast for a traditional appeal and just the right amount of texture to complement the reserved aesthetic.
