Peterson: Jekyll & Hyde (999) Fishtail Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-029-120548
Defined by a Bulldog bowl and round shank, the Rhodesian is a classic shape that's enjoyed a place on traditional pipe charts for well over a century. On Peterson's chart, the age-old form is designated as the "999," showcasing everything pipesmokers love about the traditional shape — hard lines around the bowl; a tapering rim; and a stout, muscular disposition in hand — while also boasting the Irish marque's conventional shaping cues. The bowl tapers above and below the design's defining beadlines, while the rim barely rises above the transition thanks to the extra heft lent to the shank — a signature stylistic element of Peterson.
Succeeding 2012's introduction of the popular Dracula line, Peterson released the Jekyll & Hyde in 2015, paying homage to yet another piece of classic literature. The series draws inspiration from Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 gothic novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The story follows Gabriel John Utterson, a London lawyer, and his investigation of Dr. Henry Jekyll and the mysteriously nefarious Edward Hyde. Spoiler alert: Both Jekyll and Hyde are the same person, the doctor having created a serum intended to dampen the dark side of his personality, but the potion accidentally transforms him into Mr. Hyde, the cruel personification of his inner evil. Like Jekyll's dual personalities, Peterson's Jekyll & Hyde series features two distinct finishes — a smooth, well-kept, ruby-tinged stain adorns the Dr. Jekyll side, while the craggy, dark-stained rustication of the other symbolizes the malevolent Mr. Hyde.
