Peterson: Sherlock Holmes Newgrange Spigot (CP) Professor Fishtail Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-029-124312

Professor Moriarty, a.k.a. the "Napoleon of Crime" was set as Sherlock Holmes' arch-enemy and lone intellectual equal. Even though he only appeared in two of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, it was implied that he was the absolute patriarch of a sinister international criminal ring so subtle as to make their crimes appear entirely unconnected — including many of those which Holmes had solved. Like Moriarty, the Peterson Professor of the collectible Sherlock Holmes series is thoroughly bent, specifically a bent Billiard also known as the "XL16" within the Irish marque's shape chart. Unlike the evil mastermind, this piece is comfortable and welcoming, featuring generous proportions all around.

Peterson of Dublin and Sherlock Holmes have enjoyed an inextricable association ever since Basil Rathbone first picked up a Peterson pipe on the silver screen. Rathbone's 14-film portrayal of the intrepid detective lasted from 1939 to 1946, and Peterson's Sherlock Holmes collection has honored that relationship since 1987. Peterson introduced the series with a one-off design commemorating the 100th anniversary of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A Study in Scarlet, with more shapes released throughout the subsequent years, and the line has become a staple across the Irish marque's portfolio. Each pipe in the collection also showcases Peterson's exemplary silverwork — the firm being renowned for its application of sterling silver, with the factory's smiths having completed a years-long mentorship stewarded by Peterson's senior craftsmen.

Indicated by the "CP" stamp, the Sherlock Holmes Newgrange Spigot series joins the Charles Peterson Collection, a special and prestigious collection of limited, small-run releases that highlight innovation in design and technique — as seen previously in Peterson's Iora, Rua, Barley Spigot, and Rusticated House Pipe Spigot — in honor of Charles Peterson's pioneering spirit and influence on pipe making at large. Available in limited quantities, pipes within the Charles Peterson Collection showcase unique finishes, distinctive shapes, and attention to detail possible only through small-batch production. Along with their signature shaping style, Peterson of Dublin is renowned for their silverwork. The journey of becoming a Peterson silversmith requires years of training and personal mentorship from the factory's senior craftsmen, and the superlative results testify to such a demanding, lengthy process — each worker having engineered his own mandrel to the extent that every metal accoutrement made is imprinted with the subtle, personal style of the one who machined it. Peterson's Spigot line was created in 1977, after discovering an old Peterson catalog from 1906 that pictured pipes with spigot mounts, and the series is among the best at showcasing the Irish marque's signature silver treatment, fitting sterling silver around both the shank end and stem base in a spigot-mount arrangement. The construction provides further reinforcement and durability and highlights even more sterling silver than would be used for a standard military mount. Presented here in the Newgrange finish, the flashy, regal metal is paired to a cumberland-hued acrylic stem, the red hues echoed by the smooth rim, and contrasted against the stummel's dark-stained sandblast.
