Brad Pohlmann: Sandblasted Bent Billiard with Black Palm Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-381-0152

The history of American artisan pipe making can be divided into two distinct eras: The first, in the '70s and '80s, drew much from Italian aesthetics, as well as the Danish Fancy style, creating pipes of often bold, dramatic proportions and others with more wild, Freehand aspects. The second, in the late '90s and continuing today, brought Danish and Japanese artisan inspiration and techniques, expanding the œuvre with refined classics and intricate, avant-garde renditions. Brad Pohlmann is one of the few carvers to exist in both eras of American artisan pipe making, and his style has mirrored the trajectory of that stylistic history. His pipe-making origins began in the '70s, but Pohlmann took a hiatus until the early 2000s to pursue a career in the computer industry. Since then, though, he's returned to pipe making and has established himself over the past decades as among the most renowned artisan pipe makers in North America, producing work sought the world over and celebrated not only for its distinctive aesthetic bent but also its premium craftsmanship and unparalleled engineering.

One of Pohlmann's more slender and svelte bent Billiard renditions, this piece is a beautiful example of the Danish influence on American pipe making. On traditional English and French shape charts from the early 20th century, Billiard bowls reveal a more upright, straight-walled disposition. Danish makers, though, typically soften the form with slightly tapering walls and a more plump heel. Pohlmann leans into that second interpretation here, with a bowl that urges forward and tapers gradually toward the rim. Such aspects create a dynamic and balanced composition in combination with bent shank and stem, and the pipe's leanness is furthered by the stretched saddle stem and the sleek shank. Dressed in a low-depth sandblast that conserves the silhouette's lines, it features a dark stain atop handsome grain, and the stem base adds visual intrigue with a striking, yet harmonious, accent of black palm wood.
