Kent Rasmussen: Smooth Volcano with Mazur Birch (Three Star) Tobacco Pipe

The Volcanoes we've received from Kent Rasmussen over the years have ranged from the artful and sculptural to more classical variants, but this particular example might just be the most unique interpretation of the form we've seen from the Danish master. The concave roll to the rim, the convex curve of the underside, the thick transition, the rounded, yet strongly flaring shank and mazur birch-accented stem base... all these elements combine to create an extremely complex form while still maintaining a strong familiarity to the classic shape in question — opposed to Kent's more sculptural, artistic variants that push the boundaries of what we even consider to be a "pipe form." It's presented in a vibrant contrast stain, highlighting an array of flame and straight grain around the entire stummel. A beautiful piece, indeed.
