Kent Rasmussen: Partially Rusticated Elephant's Foot with Muskox Horn Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-287-0213
Like the Blowfish, the Elephant's Foot is a shape that is designed specifically to show off grain, and Kent Rasmussen has achieved that in spades here. By bringing the flanks of the piece above the fore and aft, and using a combination of finishes that leaves the briar's birdseye rusticated in darker hues, while the flanks and their cross-grain are polished smooth and stained much lighter, the immediate impression is quite sculptural. It's further enhanced by the long line of the shank behind, also rusticated, and the stark contrast of pale muskox horn as a stem accent. Stunning on all sides, this is a delight to hold, and a piece that offers no end of visual interest.
