Kent Rasmussen: Sandblasted Dublin
Product Number: 002-287-0222
A remarkably minimalist piece, this Dublin from Kent Rasmussen is a dramatic departure from the Danish artisan's intricate, sculptural style, yet deftly demonstrates his superb approach to shape chart standards. The rim is gently inflated, aligning with Rasmussen's conventional approach to the Dublin shape while also adding an impression of additional height to the bowl. Said bowl is slightly canted forward while the transition is positioned low, melding seamlessly with the bowl's lower flanks. The shank is somewhat elongated yet perfectly proportioned in relation to the other elements and the stem's expansion disc breaks up the straight lines of the shank in profile while also echoing the ridgeline encircling the rim. While the shaping of this pipe is enough to warrant attention, the sandblasted finish is stellar and bespeaks the Danish artisan's skill in the blasting cabinet. Impressively tight, uniform patterns of ring grain climb the bowl's flanks, remaining well-defined underneath the extra stain applied to the stummel. Rasmussen rarely makes classically inclined shapes, making this piece even more tempting for collectors of artisan interpretations of traditional forms.- Jeffery Sitts
