Kent Rasmussen: Smooth Volcano with Masur Birch Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-287-0223
Prior to becoming a pipe maker, Kent Rasmussen was formally educated in engineering and architecture and both fields have undoubtedly influenced his style as an artisan carver. It's particularly evident on this sweeping Volcano, a shape that perfectly captures Rasmussen's signature sculptural style. A pair of firm ridgelines emanate from out of the shank face, continuing along the sides of the shank before eventually merging and wrapping around the lower fore of the canted bowl. The rim is notably concave in orientation, its slightly wavy disposition matching the tightly knit transition and the shaping of the shank end perfectly.
The overall shaping of this piece exemplifies that fluidity and implied momentum the Volcano shape is capable of producing when crafted by a talented pipe maker. The robust proportions and flowing lines combine seamlessly, while the shank quickly sweeps upward and nearly curves back onto the bowl's near side. Also noteworthy is how Kent utilized the shape's characteristic ridgelines along the base to inform the grain orientation on this composition. The forward-urging bowl reveals gorgeous streaks of grain around its surface, made even more striking by the vibrant contrast stain. Hypnotic, mesmerizing whorls of birdseye dominate the stummel's entire underside while pin pricks of birdseye dot the rim's surface. Accenting the shank end is masur birch, a medium Rasmussen frequently uses in his work and has been used brilliantly on this piece, as the wood's creamy, golden hue complements the lighter tones of the contrast stain.- Jeffery Sitts
