Rinaldo: Triade Reverse Calabash Bent Apple with Silver (3) (YYY) (Titania)
Product Number: 002-031-0629
Rinaldo has produced many a bent Apple rendition, far too many for me to count, and we have received them as estate pipes and new pipes, the Italian brothers creating interesting and attractive variations with each iteration. Rinaldo, however, has never presented us with a reverse Calabash, making this the first pipe we've ever seen from the workshop to utilize the system. As is usual for most reverse Calabash pipes, the proportions are inflated, giving way to a chubby shank, pairing perfectly with the stout bowl, a soft roundness inherent in both of them, magnified by the cheeked transition, composition emanating a suppleness that every curve enhances. The chamber is remarkably capacious, almost large enough to comfortably accommodate a thumb, surrounded by thick, insulating walls which, combined with the reverse Calabash system in the shank, ensures a cool, dry smoke that is eminently comfortable. The stummel is dressed in a warm auburn stain, showing off a tight array of flame grain around the bowl, contrasted by the silver band which tops the shank end, leading to an arched, stylized saddle stem.-John McElheny
