Ryan Alden: Sandblasted Bent Dublin with Amboyna Burl
Product Number: 002-777-0003
Ryan Alden has long had a fascination with the natural beauty of organic materials, and that appreciation certainly shows in his work. He uses only Italian or Algerian sources for his briar pipes, occasionally producing a piece from high-quality morta, strawberry wood, or olivewood as well — using myriad finishing techniques to bring out the inherent beauty in each of these materials. When it comes to accents, Ryan tends to keep things natural as well, as we can see here in this handsome bent Dublin, which complements its rich, dark ruby sandblast with a mount of polished amboyna burl for an organic contrast. As for the shape itself, it's a handsome (slightly) bent Dublin with some strong Danish, Italian, and modern American cues, namely in the undulating plateau crown, heavy visual weight of the bowl, and firmer style of shank and stem, respectively. Just a great piece all around, and one which especially showcases his appreciation for natural materials.
