Ryan Alden: Partially Sandblasted Billiard (Queen of Hearts)
Product Number: 002-777-0025
When Ryan Alden fashions a straight Billiard, the American carver most often hews closely to the English school. In this piece, though, he's combined that English boldness with a touch of Danish softness. The bowl isn't as tapered nor the heel particularly lifted as is common among Danish pieces, but the supple curves at the transition and smooth polished, rounded rim certainly hint at some degree of Danish inspiration. It's all very well done by Alden, creating a cohesive aesthetic while drawing from two different styles. He's made it utterly his own, though, adorning it in a natural Tanblast, with growth rings spider-webbing out from the lower right flank, and fitting it with a vulcanite mouthpiece of ink-black and sandy hues. The color palette calls to mind a rugged, sun-scorched desert — making me think this piece wouldn't look too out of place clenched between the teeth of some U.S. Marshall tracking bandits in the lawless West of yesteryear — and with Alden hailing from Texas, perhaps that's exactly what he had in mind too.-Truett Smith
