Ryan Alden: Sandblasted Tomato (Queen of Hearts)
Product Number: 002-777-0027
The last Tomato rendition we received from Ryan Alden was quite similar to this one here — similar in S-curve, similar in finish, and similar in general stance. They are not, however, identical. In this iteration, Alden has smoothed out the transition, gliding it gently into the bowl. Most notable, though, is how they differ at the bowl's waistline. Compared to the other's broadly splayed form, this one is slightly pinched at both flanks, urging the profile forward for a dynamic posture when viewed from above. It benefits from a deep, Bruyere-stained sandblast, rife with growth rings and birdseye to contrast the smooth polished rim. This piece is a testament to one of the aspects I love about artisan pipemaking — the ability and freedom to fashion the same overall shape in a variety of different ways, each one nuanced subtly for a completely unique piece, and Ryan has proved himself as once such carver, able to tweak his designs deftly and artistically for a well-rounded portfolio.-Truett Smith
