Ryan Alden: Sandblasted Bent Apple (Jack of Diamonds)
Product Number: 002-777-0041
Compact and chubby, this bent Apple from Ryan Alden fits in well with the American carver's penchant for hearty, well-rounded shapes. Although it measures just under four and a half inches in length, the rotund bowl offers a substantial presence in hand thanks to its plump waistline and stout chamber walls. And while Ryan's work has typically been devoted to classic shapes, specifically those found within the English school, this one seems to have a hint of Danish influence in its execution. It's tastefully displayed in the stummel's low-profile sandblast, the subtle cheeking at the transition, the bowl's curvaceous line work, and the smooth-polished, neatly chamfered rim. By themselves, these are just minute details but when rendered by a talented artisan like Alden, they all play a part in greatly impacting the pipe's final form. In the past, Ryan's bent Apples often wore a saddle stem with a domed base, but here, he opted to make it more defined — echoing the lines of the chamfered rim. The color palette of this piece also deserves to be noted as the stummel's deep crimson stain is perfectly complemented by the cumberland tones of the gently downturned mouthpiece.- Jeffery Sitts
