Ryan Alden: Sandblasted Nosewarmer Billiard (Jack of Diamonds)
Product Number: 002-777-0043
Consider this Ryan Alden Billiard compared to one of his past iterations. Shape-wise, they're both compact, nosewarmer Billiards, and in regards to dimensions and measurement, they're near identical. Yet, the two forms are markedly different, testifying to the American carver's stylistic diversity while still being able to fit pieces into his own signature aesthetic. In this piece, Alden has approached the classic Billiard from a more Italian neoclassic perspective — the bold, thick-walled bowl shooting austerely upright, devoid of taper toward the rim. Out back, the shank tapers gradually from the defined transition, planting the visual weight undoubtedly at the bowl which dominates the profile. Completed with a trim saddle stem, this is one pocket pipe that doesn't lack in chamber depth, the vast surface area of the bowl offering plenty of space to showcase concisely stacked ripples of ring grain.-Truett Smith
