Ryan Alden: Rusticated Billiard with Bamboo (Jack of Diamonds) Tobacco Pipe

Having only received one other bamboo-adorned briar before from Ryan Alden, this Billiard is a welcomed sight and is hopefully an indication that the American artisan will continue to experiment with the organic medium. In this piece, Ryan has fashioned a fairly classic take on the Billiard, the rounded, slightly tapered bowl dominating the profile while the high-set transition creates a supple heel to accentuate the form's plump disposition. Out back, then, trails two slender knuckles of pale bamboo, standing in stark contrast to the dark-stained stummel. The rusticated finish provides a delightful feel in hand, and while the chamber depth is on par with a Group 4, the piece remains quite lightweight and compact — a true pocket pipe that's as gorgeous in its presentation as it is defined by quality craftsmanship and versatility.
