Ryan Alden: Smooth Apple (King of Clubs)
Product Number: 002-777-0046
Dressed in a classically English, deep ruby, Bruyere stain and paired to a traditional stem of jet-black vulcanite, this Ryan Alden Apple could easily be mistaken for the work of a certain, esteemed, white-spotted English marque. It fits soundly into Alden's love for classic Anglo-French shape chart standards. That said, he's put his own spin on the design, drastically abbreviating the overall size to make for an easily pocketed nosewarmer. As for the shape, the American carver poises the voluptuous, almost Ball-like bowl on the end of a comparatively trim shank and stem combination, the two dramatically separated by a crisply defined transition — the bowl's plumpness almost extending over the transition's line. Said rotundness is contrasted, then, by the rim's steep taper, lending the form a dose of firmness. The flattened underside adds to the piece's practicality, enabling it to sit upright when not tucked away in a pocket, and the obvious forward cant of the bowl makes me think that Ryan is just daring us to call this a Devil Anse.-Truett Smith
