Ryan Alden: Sandblasted Cherrywood (Queen of Hearts)
Product Number: 002-777-0051
The classic Cherrywood design is, essentially, a bent version of the Poker, the transition still high-set and the form still endowed with sturdy sitting capabilities. This rendition from Ryan Alden is a more organic, modernist take on the shape. The American carver has lowered the transition, extending the shank into the lower bowl, and instead of the flattened foot being positioned right below the bowl, Ryan has aligned it at the lower bowl's fore. Such an orientation lends the piece a dramatic cant when seated, the shank and stem shooting up from out of the angled transition. Instead of a cylindrical, Poker bowl, Alden has also opted for a plateau-crowned Dublin — the fore-most line slightly arcing to add more organic whimsy to the profile. Thick-walled and robust, it's all dressed in one of Ryan's ruby-tinged sandblasts, matching well with the cumberland stem and showcasing a concise display of rippling grain and vertical striations. To accent, the innermost portion of the rim is left smooth and glossy, displaying a funneled disposition with the natural plateau studding the edges.-Truett Smith
