Ryan Alden: Sandblasted Strawberry Wood Lovat (Queen of Hearts)
Product Number: 002-777-0059
While Ryan Alden tends to gravitate to classic shapes, his powers of interpretation cross many boundaries of style. He carves in American/Industrial style, in Italian bowl-centric style, in classic English style, and here, with this Lovat, in Danish style. Most noticeable is the shape of the bowl, with its somewhat broad heel and soft taper to the rim, which, in Danish style, has been gently rounded and left smooth in contrast to the very active sandblasted grain of the strawberry wood from which this piece is constructed. The grain is actually quite uniform for strawberry wood, and approximates the wavy patterns of briar growth rings stacking up the bowl. The piece sits sturdily, thanks to a small, slightly flattened panel along the underside of the shank and heel. Like almost all of Ryan's pipes, this piece reveals a shank that tapers slightly toward the stem, though in this case it's very subtle, with the lower shank straight and the upper lowering toward the shank end. From above, the saddle bit does not widen or expand, but maintains the width of the shank all the way to the lip button, which is a design option I particularly favor. Ryan has been doing spectacular work, and this piece joins his many others as a contribution to fine artisan carving at a reasonably accessible price.- Chuck Stanion
