Ryan Alden: Sandblasted Billiard (Jack of Diamonds)
Product Number: 002-777-0062
While previous Billiards from Ryan Alden have primarily been influenced by traditional English shaping cues, this offering is noticeably more Danish-inspired in its execution. The plump, Apple-esque bowl features a soft taper, pleasantly supple curves, and Danish-styled cheeking around the transition. It still manages to fit well into Alden's penchant for bold, robust proportions and continues to highlight his ability to interpret shape chart standards in a uniquely stylized way. While the sandblast isn't as dramatically craggy as past examples, Ryan has read the grain perfectly on this block and maximized its potential. Specks of blasted birdseye populate the flanks, while lanes of cross grain are visible fore and aft, providing an abundance of crisp texture to enjoy in hand. The American carver has then dressed the stummel in a reserved earthy brown contrast stain and paired it to a brindled vulcanite stem with its mix of yellow and black tones calling to mind images of pollen on a pond's surface during springtime. Alden has also flattened the bowl's base, enabling this piece to sit remarkably well on flat surfaces. But all of this shouldn't come as much of a surprise as he's a carver known for practical artisan designs with a keen eye for subtle details.- Jeffery Sitts
