Ryan Alden: Sandblasted Billiard with Boxwood (King of Clubs)
Product Number: 002-777-0072
It's a joy to view this pipe in profile. Billiards are so often left lacking in some fundamental way, because each careful incline of curvature affects the shape dramatically. Note in this example the flank of the bowl nearest the stem. Where that curvature descends from the rim to the transition is essential for shaping a Billiard properly, and the slightest of miscalculations can ruin a shape, especially one that is sandblasted and therefore easily risked by a surface treatment. But with Ryan Alden, those issues do not arise. This piece is quite small, easily of pocketable dimensions, and has an oval shank separated from the mouthpiece by a wide fitment of pale boxwood at the stem base. The transition from bowl to shank is perfectly executed to maintain the bowl's shaping, and even in a diminutive overall size such as this, the crisp sandblast provides plenty of diverting texture and grain for the wandering eye and finger pads to admire.- Chuck Stanion
