Sabina Santos: Sandblasted Bent Billiard with Bamboo Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-817-0020
Compared to her Calabash and Tadpole designs, this bent Billiard is on the more traditional end of Sabina Santos's shaping spectrum. That said, it's still a non-standard take on the shape chart standard, as she's elongated the form considerably via three knuckles of bamboo and a stretched saddle stem. Streamlined and slender through the shank and transition, the bowl is lent an especially poised orientation, seeming to sprout upward on the end. The transition is slightly angled, coinciding well with the slight downward turn of the mouthpiece. The bowl, then, is dressed in a concise, ultra-fine sandblast, Danish in style and, no doubt, influenced by Sabina's trip to Denmark during which she spent a week with Hans "Former" Nielsen. For a touch of asymmetry and organic appeal, the rim is kissed with plateau at the left side, while the rest is left smooth polished and neatly chamfered. Though a lengthier piece, it's surprisingly lightweight and boasts Santos's deft craftsmanship, proved by her excellent bamboo work and the use of an extra-durable, carbon fiber tenon.
