Sabina Santos: Smooth Apple with Mammoth Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-817-0030
While her workshop is in Portugal, Sabina Santos has spent a considerable amount of time in Denmark, learning from renowned carvers, such as Kai Nielsen and Hans "Former" Nielsen. Such Danish influence is apparent in this straight Apple, and Sabina has rendered it beautifully. It's a conveniently sized rendition, measuring just under five inches in total length with the plump, affably rounded bowl attracting much of the visual focus. The bowl's broad waistline is positioned low, further accentuating its chubbiness with prominent cheeking displayed along the lower flanks near the transition. Said bowl tapers from its bulging flanks toward the rim, with streaks of flame grain rising in concert with the gradual taper and made even more stunning thanks to the vivid contrast stain Santos applied. The Portuguese artisan's penchant for exotic accent materials is well known and is brilliantly showcased on this composition. A band of stabilized mammoth accents the base of the saddle stem and has been seamlessly integrated as its dark streaks blend in with the vulcanite mouthpiece while the lighter tones offer some striking contrast. It makes this design even more visually stimulating and demonstrates how a traditional shape can be further elevated by a gifted artisan.- Jeffery Sitts
