Sabina Santos: Smooth Bent Brandy with Mammoth
Product Number: 002-817-0031
The stylistic range throughout Sabina Santos' portfolio is incredible, as the Portuguese carver is able deliver organically inspired designs, highly creative artisan renditions of the classic Calabash, and beautiful renditions of traditional forms. This bent Brandy interpretation is certainly on the more classic side for Sabina and readily showcases her skill with shape chart standards. The bowl is voluptuous in its shaping, gradually tapering from its wide waistline toward the rim as is expected from the Brandy shape. However, most Brandies wish they could be rendered so precisely and by a talented artisan with Sabina's skill set. The grain orientation conforms perfectly with the bowl's shaping as streaks of vertical grain flow up the flanks and made even more impressive by the rich, walnut contrast stain.
Behind the curvaceous bowl, the shank curls lithely upward before the mouthpiece concludes in a soft, gentle downturn to balance the bowl's forward-urging momentum. Particularly enticing is the accent Sabina chose for this piece, as her appreciation for exotic materials is no secret and her ability to incorporate them on her designs is truly impressive. A ferrule of stabilized mammoth adorns the shank face, offering unique patterns that warrant admiration while its pale tone pairs well the lighter hues of the stummel's finish. This is a stellar piece from Sabina that exemplifies her creative and exciting approach to pipe making.- Jeffery Sitts
