Sabina Santos: Sandblasted Apple with Bamboo and Fordite Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-817-0038
Combining self-taught skills with those learned from some of the most notable Danish carvers in the business, Sabina Santos is among Portugal's most notable artisan pipe makers. Sabina has spent time in Denmark, accumulating further knowledge from the likes of Hans "Former" Nielsen and Tom Eltang among others, but has embraced signature design cues of her own. The artisan is known for her appreciation of color along with an ease in utilizing alternate materials, both of which can be seen in this Apple.
A pert, low-slung bowl with a faint, almost indiscernible cant offers plenty of charm, its plump sides topping a broad, rounded heel, allowing it to sit sturdily upright. It's poised at the end of a much-abbreviated shank, which is extended by four knuckles of bamboo. The light beige, organic medium is bookended by trim, striated and multi-colored bands of Fordite, the automotive enamel known as "Detroit Agate" consisting of paint that's hardened and collected from auto factories. The colors of that material, along with the circular nature of the knuckles, pair wonderfully well with Sabina's dazzling, purple vulcanite saddle stem, its base continuing the slender curviness of the bamboo.
A Danish-style, natural sandblast on the stummel showcases handsome growth rings, while the alternative material comprising the shank extension and its bands, along with the colorful mouthpiece, make for a sleek arrangement in back. This pocket-friendly pipe is sure to be a stunning standout in a discerning collector's anthology of artful pipes.-Angela Robertson
