Sabina Santos: Partially Sandblasted Bent Dublin with Buddha Belly Bamboo Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-817-0039
Fusing self-taught knowledge with skills gleaned from working with several Danish artisans of note including Hans "Former" Nielsen and Tom Eltang, Sabina Santos has made her own mark in the global world of pipe making. One of few professional carvers in Portugal, the former corporate financier continues to impress, her pipes boasting superb engineering, handsome finishes and creative design.
This lightweight bent Dublin displays a good bit of asymmetry and demonstrates the artisan's ease in working with alternative materials, the latter an oft-seen adornment in many pipes within her growing portfolio. The rather low-lying bowl flares upward from a firm, angular heel that stops just shy of being a spur. Rather than cant forward, this pipes forward momentum is informed by the fore sides elongated angle. The rim is wavy and inflated, with plateau at fore and aft, a bit of a departure from that normally seen all around the rim; here, it's centered in the middle of the bowl. An abbreviated shank is indented on the left flank, which leads to the integration of Buddha belly bamboo, the nodule closest to the bowl sharing that same marked feature. The knuckles are smooth and carry as much visual focus as the bowl, while the base of the stem continues the shaping of the nodes, the lines of the form, along with its curvature seemingly extending well into the vulcanite mouthpiece, which is slender and slightly turned down.
This piece is dressed in an extra-dark sandblast, the hues pairing well with the black plateau and stem. The smooth section of the bowl and the shank wear a smooth mahogany contrast stain, the rim revealing handsome whorls of birdseye for a pipe that's sure to elevate one's collection.-Angela Robertson
