Sabina Santos: Sandblasted Natural Bent Apple with Durat Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-817-0072

Portuguese artisan Sabina Santos hand-carves refined shapes that both celebrate schools of design from all over the world and display her own unique style. Most often the celebrated school is the Danish one, and her respect for traditional Danish design can be traced back to her beginnings when she embarked on a pilgrimage to Denmark. There she was instructed by many of the great Danish artisans and, on her second trip, spent more than a week working under the keen eye of Hans "Former" Nielsen, solidifying her shaping style and giving her insight into the drilling and internal engineering of her work.

Sabina Santos' stylistic range is really quite incredible, as she routinely demonstrates mastery over an array of different design styles, making for a richly diverse portfolio: something attested to by this bent Apple. The majority of Santos' Apple renditions are straight, compact, and reserved, while this piece boasts a more expressive, dynamic character that helps it stand out well. The transition here is wide, leaving plenty of room to drape a digit, and its cheeked build enhances the plumpness of the bowl considerably before giving way to the shank. Said shank lifts as it extends out of the transition, angled upward and comprising a compressed, ovoid shape which is lined on the right flank by a pair of ridges and on the left by a single ridge. On the right, the shank features a flattened panel between the ridgelines, while the curved top and bottom areas expand toward the middle and taper to the left side's single line. The result is a semi-teardrop shape that's complex and understated at once. Paired to the shank here is a seafoam green vulcanite half-saddle stem accented with a broad band of Durat: a composite polyester material that utilizes 30% recycled plastic to create vibrant patterns with contemporary palettes. Up front, the bowl stands atop a rounded, pronounced heel that pushes down slightly at the fore, drawing the eye to the front of the pipe and the ample curves that surround this bowl's rotund taper to the rim. Dressed in a crisp, natural sandblast, the absence of stain here highlights rippling ring grain and visible streaks of flame that are sure to color deeply with patina as this pipe is smoked.
