Sam Adebayo: Smooth Bent Egg with Horn
Product Number: 002-750-0036
This bent Egg from Sam Adebayo is a design that's born out of the American artisan's deft ability at reading the briar's natural grain orientation, resulting here in a bowl that's subtly asymmetrical. The band of cross grain adorning the rotund, forward-inclined bowl sweeps through the lower, left side; around the fore; and into the upper, right flank before traveling back down toward the shank. It's this specific aspect of the grain that led Sam to make the right side slightly more bulbous, that edge of the rim also raised a touch more than the rest of the piece. The resulting asymmetry is subtle, yet without it, the grain wouldn't be as accentuated. With rounded plateau atop the rim and a supple use of gentle lines, this piece features an inherent Danish sense of shaping, supported further by the use of a horn mount at the shank end, while the proportions of the piece exemplify Adebayo's American Industrial sense of proportions — added muscularity having been afforded to the shank. The creamy tones of the horn contrast against the walnut stain of the stummel, and the rounded end of the mount also acts as an accent in how it echoes the orientation of the saddle stem. All in all, it's a gorgeous example of the Danish style as interpreted by the American school and Sam's individual skill and eye for detail.-Truett Smith
