Sam Adebayo: Smooth Tulip Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-750-0069
Sam Adebayo is an American pipe artisan whose journey began with a teenage admiration for jazz legends like Charles Mingus and Eric Dolphy. What started as a stylistic curiosity evolved into a serious passion, eventually leading him to craft the very pipes he couldn't find on the market. Drawing inspiration from masters like Todd Johnson, Bruce Weaver, and Hiroyuki Tokutomi, Adebayo blends Anglo-French tradition with subtle Japanese influences.
The Tulip shape is a refined expression of Danish pipe design, combining fluid curves with a subtle sense of motion — and here, Adebayo interprets it masterfully. The profile's aerodynamic presence is achieved through sleek lines and a carefully balanced composition. A graceful undercurve begins at the base of the bowl, rising into a forward-leaning rim that gives the pipe a dynamic, canted stance. The bowl's plump lower flanks enhance this posture, creating a sense of momentum throughout its robust proportions. This particular Tulip features a round shank seamlessly paired with a long saddle stem, the shift softened by asymmetrical shoulders that maintain the shape's continuous visual flow. The near-seamless transition not only extends the silhouette but also adds to the pipe's elegance. When viewed in profile, the stem's gentle S-curve introduces a rhythmic grace, completing the silhouette with poise. Finished in a rich mahogany stain, the stummel displays cross-grain at the fore and aft, while beautifully defined birdseye accentuates the bowl's contours.
