Smio Satou: Smooth Koi with Tsuishu Tobacco Pipe

This might be the first rendition of the "Koi" that we've seen from Smio Satou, but it's obvious that it's not an unfamiliar form to the extremely talented artisan. Often drawing from nature in his designs, the delicate balance between the organic and the sculptural has been well-preserved, resulting in a form that uses quick lines and rounded curves to emulate the movement and silhouette of the animal itself. It's not just the superb execution of the shape that sets his design apart either; rather, it's that feat paired with his perfect grain orientation — using those same sculptural lines and organic flair to set the stage for a vibrant display of flame and straight grain.
