Smio Satou: Partially Sandblasted Snail
Product Number: 002-142-0385
Though I believe this is the first shape we've seen from Smio Satou to evoke the look of a mollusk, the Japanese artisan is no stranger to organic forms. Like many of his organic forms, this Snail treads the careful line between outright natural-esque and sculpturally evocative, with the carver making good use of tight, quick lines and subtle curves to emulate the motion and profile of the creature itself. He's also used the light, fine sandblasted texture and excellent grain orientation to further drive the image home, with the natural ripples of grain accentuating the curved flanks and neat pinch of the transition. The underside is nothing but birdseye, highlighted by a warm, smooth finish, the likes of which can be seen peaking out via the deftly-defined, precise ridges running the length of the underside, leading the eye to a rim and shank-face of the same subtle gloss. The feel in hand is excellent, too, offering a firm, satisfying grip with fingers grasping the bowl, or index finger crooked about the transition.
