Smio Satou: Partially Sandblasted Volcano with Urushi
Product Number: 002-142-0405
A daring piece in more ways than one, this paneled Volcano from Smio Satou takes a typically organic shape and presents it with something of a structured geometry, though its no less graceful for it. With an underside defined by two distinct curves, one at the bowl's base and one framing the underside of the shank and stem, a third at the rim offers a light sense of playfulness, even further accentuated by the subtle impression of forward cant. Really though, and despite the crisp ridges and pronounced paneling, there's hardly a straight line to be found on this pipe, though all of this is roughly one half of what I consider to qualify the piece as 'daring.' The other is the carver's choice of finish, which everywhere but the underside is a rugged sandblast, serving to coax a brilliant display of stacked ring-grain on all flanks, stained a dark, smoky ruby. It needs be said that Satou's sandblasted pieces are quite rare, making up a fairly small fraction of his body of work, and as this one wears an underside of extra-dark Japanese "urushi" laquer, the likes of which require an extremely time and labor-intensive process to apply, I think it's safe to say it might be a while before we encounter another one quite like it.
