Smio Satou: Smooth Bent Dublin with Tsuishu
Product Number: 002-142-0412
Smio Satou really excels at these sorts of jaunty, rakish Dublin shapes, lending the bowl a strong taper along the fore and aft, leading quickly into a sharp spur of sorts along the heel; here, however, he's matched that sharper style of shaping with a touch of the organic, pinching the transition to allow the shank to flare out towards the bit, culminating in a kiss of craggy plateau near the mortise. That subtle bit of gnarly texture and darker shade makes for a beautiful, natural contrast with the otherwise smooth, contrast stained briar — further complemented by one of Smio's signature tsuishu accents along the stem base. Of course, the grain is equally as splendid: a gorgeous flame pattern erupting all around the bowl, with a dense sea of whirling birdseye filling the rim.- Andrew Wike
