Smio Satou: Smooth Pitcher with Tsuishu
Product Number: 002-142-0413
I quite like how acutely gifted pipemakers (or really artists in general) tend to play with dynamic antitheses in their work. Take this brilliant Pitcher rendition from Smio Satou. The last (and prior to this one, sole) rendition we'd seen from the carver before was sort of everything this briar isn't, though they're both of course impressive in their own rights. The former rendition was very forward in profile, with a domed rim that practically reached forward from its tight, tapered base, complemented by a long stretch of arrow-straight bamboo shank. This piece, on the other hand, is somewhat languid and rearward-ebbing of silhouette, and rather than the bulbous, inflated rim, Satou opted instead for a more concave arrangement, complementing it with a sinuous, gently flaring shank and saddle-stem. Both work to accentuate a sense of drama, to be sure, and there's certainly no shortage of excellent flame and birdseye alike. And of course, the carver's implementation of a bright, retro palette with his use of tsuishu at the stem base lends the composition just a touch of playfulness. Amazing work.- Daniel Bumgardner
