Smio Satou: Smooth Volcano with Tsuishu
Product Number: 002-142-0414
Similar to those Volcano renditions Satou was producing roughly a decade ago, we're pleased to see the heralded Japanese carver revisiting the organic form with greater frequency as of late. He's continued to tweak and evolve his variations, and though this one shows that same upward-flicking motion of shank and stem, the entire thing seems much more controlled overall. That's not to say those prior iterations were anywhere near wild, per se; they just ebbed more toward the realm of organicism, as opposed to this piece's more structural, almost architectural disposition. There's nothing out of control about that grain however, with some of the tightest flame and straight grain I have seen highlighted in briar, and crystal-clear birdseye at the convex underside. And despite said curvature at the base, it balances perfectly just underneath the transition in the satisfying way Satou's briars tend to do, affording more opportunity to examine that delicate tsuishu accent at the stem base. If it weren't already clear: I am quite fond.- Daniel Bumgardner
