Smio Satou: Smooth Bent Dublin with Tsuishu
Product Number: 002-142-0424
When Shane picked up this fresh batch of pipes from Smio Satou, he spent time with the Japanese carver in his home and workshop, observing the artisan's process firsthand and getting to hear personally from Smio about his pieces. Over the years, Satou has been gradually tweaking and perfecting a deep, red stain, and he's finally got it to a point that he's incredibly pleased with. It's presented here on this bent Dublin. In fact, out of the four pipes from Satou in today's update, this is the artisan's singular favorite. Shape-wise, it's a slight departure from Satou's typical Dublin rendition, with the heel here being much more rounded than pointed. It still features the same elongated shank, slight downward turn of the stem, and vertically pinched, flared bowl. Dressed in the carver's new, red stain, the presentation is at once striking yet alluringly subdued, allowing the vivid rainbow hues of the tsuishu to really shine through at the stem base. The tsuishu used here is also worthy of special note as it comes from new old-stock that was made by one of the first pipemakers in Japan: Satou's father.-Truett Smith
