Smio Satou: Sandblasted Volcano with Bamboo and Tsuishu
Product Number: 002-142-0431
A conspicuously Satou-esque form, this Volcano shape from the venerated Japanese carver boasts a number of his characteristic cues. First, the shape's stance in profile is a dead giveaway, as the skilled artisan has quite the penchant for sitters imbued with this sort of lively organic dynamism, especially emphasized through his use of bamboo. Indeed, two darkened knuckles of the stuff act as a beautifully natural complement to the dark, dark textured Volcano form, its depth of shade obtained through use of one of the pipemaker's gorgeously jet-black lacquer treatments, coupled with a brilliant sandblast. The latter serves to unveil a beautifully concentric display of ring-grain, and the former is echoed in the bamboo's nodes, as Satou opted for the lightest touches of the stuff at strategic points along the shank extension. The smartly downturned saddle bit sports a rather rustic palette of traditional tsuishu, altogether making for a composition that's certain to become a treasured addition to your collection.- Daniel Bumgardner
