Smio Satou: Smooth Bent Dublin Sitter with Tsuishu
Product Number: 002-142-0435
A Cherrywood-esque interpretation of the bent Dublin, this Smio Satou composition perfectly captures the Japanese artisan's talents when it comes to fashioning unique renditions of traditional shapes and re-imagining them through his creative lens. The most prominent aspect of this muscular design is the broad rim's elegant curvature and how it creates the impression of forward momentum, something that's further emphasized by the stem's gentle bend. The bowl's heel is flattened, enabling this piece to sit stably without the need for a pipe rest. However, the shaping and grain ensures that this will be a pipe that will be in hand often. Tendrils of flame grain sweep upward along the bowl's flanks, perfectly following the shaping of the flanks. Birdseye populates the sloping rim as well as the base, separated from the rest of the bowl by the crisp ridgelines.
The grain is made even more stimulating thanks to Satou's signature urushi finish, which is highly durable compared to other finishing techniques and will retain its glossy appearance significantly longer. Accenting the stem base is a vibrant, multi-colored band of tsuishu, made through a months long process of layering thin strips of Japanese lacquer. It's an incredibly time consuming and difficult process to produce but the results as you can see are quite stunning. This piece is versatile and practical, fashioned by one of the world's most talented artisan carvers.- Jeffery Sitts
