Smio Satou: Smooth Bent Pot with Tsuishu
Product Number: 002-142-0437
A wide, oval bowl with a subtly undulating rim and soft edge work provide a wide palette for birdseye on this bent Pot from Smio Satou, as well as crisp ridgelines around its circumference and a soft chamfer around the tobacco chamber. From that rim descends vertical strands of remarkably tight vertical grain, surrounding the bowl with neat uniformity.
The bowl takes visual prominence, an aspect supported by a relatively demure shank that is round and gently curves upward to meet the saddle stem, at the base of which is an elegant accent of tsuishu, made of layer after layer of Japanese lacquer for a particularly distinguishing feature. The forward heel is prominent, adding to the muscular quality of the bowl, and the gentle downturn of the stem will admirably balance that large bowl when clenched. A design such as this, combining Danish and Japanese carving cues, would be a special addition to any collection.- Chuck Stanion
