Smio Satou: Smooth Bent Dublin with Tsuishu
Product Number: 002-142-0439
While the heel of this Dublin from Smio Satou is somewhat forward inclined for the impression of a heavier base, the effect is kept subtle, as is appropriate for Japanese designs. And few carvers are more experienced than Satou, who worked for 25 years at Tsuge before retiring and carrying on his own brand of spectacular artisan pipes. Here the oval bowl is broadly topped by a well-rounded rim, which is filled with birdseye and reveals a soft chamfer around the tobacco chamber, while its circumference is sharply ridged.
The transition is tight, with the shank seeming to emerge from the bowl as it turns gently upward to meet the tapered stem. The base of that stem is accented by a colorful band of tsuishu, made of multiple layers of Japanese lacquers. It's among the most elegant accents I've been privileged to see, and it's highly regarded in the collecting community. Here it does especially well to bring just the right amount of color into the traditional palette of this composition, which could proudly preside over your own collection if you're lucky enough to take advantage of this opportunity.- Chuck Stanion
