Crafted by the expert artisans in Savinelli's factory, the Autograph series is made up of pipes which deviate from standard shaping conventions, allowing the carver to experiment with form and add a personal touch to each pipe. This example is a bent Apple remarkably close to being traditional, were it not for, firstly, the boldly forward canted bowl, chamber facing outward, paired with a sloped rim to imbue the pipe with a palpable momentum. The bowl fills the hand nicely, its bulbous flanks swelling to the waistline before tapering to the heel, flattening at its apex. The back of the heel is spurred, facing rearward and it sweeps upward into the shank, angling it vertically sharply, feeding the olive-green shank. The dark sandblast that dresses the stummel reveals a handsome array of growth rings that radiate from the heel, the undulating grain adding a visual intrigue to the piece.
