More moderate in dimensions than many Savinelli Autograph pipes, this Volcano pairs versatile size with bespoke shaping to create a pipe you will want to look at and smoke over and over again. It begins with a flattened base that tilts the pipe forward in posture, rising in a concave curl to reach a crisp ridgeline denoting the beginning of the mountain, which in turn slopes inward with the briar's grain as both sweep upward with clean elegance. The transition is gradual, a soft curve that makes me think more of flowing lava than the sharpness of a carver's tool, mirroring the undercurve of the bowl's base. A rich chestnut stain and glossy smooth finish do well to accentuate not only the flame grain on the flanks, but a wealth of birdseye on the underside, demanding that my eye explore every bit of this fine piece. A sleek, jet-black stem of tapered acrylic completes the arrangement, complementing the stummel without drawing attention away from it, and curling downward to promote a comfortable smoking position.
