You don't see many virgin-finished briars — whether made by an independent artisan or a large, established marque with generations of pipe making under its belt (like say Savinelli), such pipes can only ever make up up but a fraction of production. Though a virgin finish will darken and take color over time, when new an au naturale briar leaves any flaws standing out in a manner that's hard to miss, and using fills simply is not even an option. Without stain or contrast, it takes just the block, and a fair bit of luck, to get a pipe worthy of a presentation like that offered by the Savinelli Pigna.
