Savinelli: Gaius Smooth (645 KS) (6mm)
Product Number: 002-033-45308
Savinelli's "645 KS" is a wide, stout take on the bent Brandy, the bowl prioritizing breadth over height, yet still boasting a respectably deep chamber within. The bowl wears its waistline low before subtly tapering up toward the rim, while the transition offers ample room for the thumb to rest. Unlike the Italian marque's "628" bent Brandy, the "645 KS" is a low-slung take on the classic shape with the bowl more Apple-esque in its curvature, and it displays a greater degree of bend compared to the "144 KS." It's an ideal choice for pipesmokers who prefer robust, substantial designs that also remain balanced and lightweight enough to be clenched comfortably in the jaw.
Named after the Roman praenomen ("given name"), Savinelli's Gaius series continues the marque's thematic lines that pay homage to Italy's rich history. Most likely derived from the Latin word gaudere meaning "to rejoice," Gaius was a common name within the ancient Roman Republic — Gaius Julius Caesar and Gaius Octavius, later Augustus, being perhaps the most prolific title bearers. In this example, the stummel wears a vivid, honey-blonde stain, accentuating the briar's natural grain underneath. The marque then incorporates a jet-black acrylic mount and mouthpiece, as well as a single white band between the shank and mount, to complete the composition.- Jeffery Sitts
