Scott Klein: Smooth Bent Apple Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-517-0107
Although past bent Apples from Scott Klein have primarily been of the tightly-knit and extra compact variety, the American artisan can certainly craft a beautifully sweeping and highly organic rendition that's steeped in classic Danish shaping cues. This offering notably features an Ivarsson-esque teardrop shank from out of which a crisp ridgeline begins its journey along the left side of the shank before seamlessly dissolving into the bowl. The shank's continuous curves gradually lead the eye to the plump bowl up front that sits perched on the end of the curling transition, evoking the look of a piece of fruit sitting on the end of a branch. The sweeping, smooth flowing line work seemingly elevates the bowl higher, while creating cheeking around the transition, a signature shaping cue within the Danish pipe making approach.
While there's no additional accents needed to make this piece any more special, Klein has utilized plateau in a sparing, yet highly effective manner that adds even more organicism to the composition. A small touch of plateau graces the top of the inner rim while even more of it can be found along the flaring shank face, giving you plenty to admire while you're smoking this sublime piece. Grain-wise, Scott has read the grain orientation of this block wonderfully and maximized its potential for a truly stunning visual showcase. Streaks of vertical grain dance all around the chubby bowl while the entire underside of the shank is dominated by a sea of swirling birdseye. Absolutely brilliant work from Scott that balances form and function like few others can.- Jeffery Sitts
