Scott Klein: Sandblasted Billiard with Silver
Product Number: 002-517-0111
Scott Klein has consistently demonstrated his deft ability over the years when it comes rendering striking interpretations of classic shapes and highly organic designs, making this Billiard somewhat of an anomaly within the American artisans portfolio. That isn't to say Scott will shy away from crafting exquisite take on shape chart standards, but he's certainly a carver that likes to push the boundaries within the pipemaking world, infusing shapes with his unique style and distinctive approach. Measuring just under four and a half inches in length, this compact offering can be slipped to a pocket easily and its light weight enables it to be effortlessly clenched. The stout bowl has a Pot-like breadth to it and also boasts a respectable depth to its chamber — an unusual but welcomed feature on a relatively small pipe. Just as remarkable as the shaping is the sandblasted finish the stummel wears, as Scott has unveiled an endless array of rippling ring grain that creeps up from the heel all the way up toward the rim. And though the American carver occasionally uses accents such as horn and bamboo on his pipes, silver is one we've only seen him use once before. The trim silver band used here handsomely contrasts against the stummel's jet-black stain and creates a classy, dress-pipe aesthetic in the process. Beautifully reserved, yet impressive work from Scott Klein.- Jeffery Sitts
