Scott Klein: Sandblasted Tomato with Masur Birch Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 002-517-0116

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Scott Klein developed an affinity for woodworking in his youth. After working a variety of trade jobs, Scott Klein eventually met Alex Florov, who introduced Klein to pipe making. Klein quickly became enamored with the process, and, under Florov's tutelage, learned the nuances of engineering, shaping, finishing, and accenting. Over the years, Klein has honed his craft and developed a style completely his own, though influences from the Danish, Japanese, and America schools of design are evident in his work.

A handsome showcase of Klein's style, this Tomato sees a plump, full-bodied bowl posed at the fore of an upturned oval shank and a demurely curved saddle stem. Said bowl possess a dynamic forward-cant that imbues the composition with an active appearance in profile. The acrobatic shank-and-stem arrangement lends a pronounced gesture to the shape's aft side and promotes a comfortable smoking posture, all while keeping the form balanced, both visually and in hand. A dark sandblast dresses the stummel and unveils rippling grain across the bowl and shank alike, while a trim band of masur birch accents the shank end and adds a touch of vibrant color to the pipe's otherwise muted color palette.
