Scott Thile: Smooth Bent Apple with Ivorite (FH) (450) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 002-615-0071
Scott Thile's introduction into the world of pipe making began at age 16, when he first started enjoying pipes and pipe tobacco. With a background as a musician and piano tuner, the progression to artisan pipe maker seems somewhat out of left field, but his talent with tools and wood working lent him something of a natural affinity toward the craft. Thile's learning has been generally autodidactic, though he's spent time with Todd Johnson and Bruce Weaver and is inspired by traditional shaping, saying once that his overall design style is inspired by "The Danish neoclassics as interpreted by the North American greats." That kind of sensibility is reflected in this bent Apple, fusing the plump, soft lines present in the Danish school with some more firm, nearly architectural elements.
The posture of this piece is striking, and the first thing that leaps out at me is the decidedly gestural flow of its lines from button to rim, a remarkably sinuous composition that, despite its visual breaks, is imminently curvaceous. The shank is paneled, though gently, and features soft ridges at the apexes of its vertices, while the "flat" surfaces are actually rounded, lending a bit more softness to the profile while still upholding the pipe's firmness. The transition is quite deeply cheeked, and the underside of the shank continues through to the underside of the pipe, the cheeking following suit and giving the shank the affectation of cradling the bowl, as well as lifting the heel and thrusting the bowl into further prominence. Said bowl is decidedly plump, with a low-lying waistline and charmingly rounded sides, tapering gently to the rim which is given more weight on the fore end, thanks to the aft ends more angled travel. Additionally the rim features a steep bevel into the chamber, sure to make loading tobacco a dream. A trim band of Ivorite adorns the shank end, contrasting both the jet-black stem and the stummel's warm, blonde contrast stain, one which reveals a beautiful array of swirling flame grain around the stummel with swathes of birdseye on the topside and underside.-John McElheny
