Scottie Piersel: Sandblasted Dublin with Ivorite
Product Number: 002-786-0091
Scottie Piersel may be best known for her long, pencil-shanked compositions, she was a winner in the Kansas City carving contest with a traditional Author, so she has carving chops beyond her specialty. This squat Dublin features a very muscular disposition, its rim wide and minimally concave, with an abrupt taper to the heel, which is firm to support the bowl/shank combination. That shank itself is quite beefy and terminates at a decorative accent ring of ivorite. The blast is medium depth and the grain very well defined. The saddle stem is vulcanite and colored in teals and golds for dynamic contrast. While Scottie has said that she concentrates on shape rather than grain, clearly she has oriented the block for this pipe with the grain accounted for, as the growth rings rise up the bowl with metronomic regularity. It's understandable if you've been waiting for the right pencil-shank Scottie pipe, but don't overlook her more traditional compositions.- Chuck Stanion
