Scottie Piersel: Sandblasted Bent Billiard
Product Number: 002-786-0092
Though Scottie Piersel's work is typically associated with her signature, pencil-shanked "Scottie" designs, she's well-versed in classic shapes and able to produce renditions that are remarkably robust and hearty in their proportions. This bent Billiard is an excellent example and calls to mind a rendition we previously received from the American artisan, its elegant, fluid S-curve highly reminiscent of Dunhill's iconic "LC" shape. This "swan-neck" bent Billiard style was common among early 20th century pipemaking, and here Scottie has crafted a magnificent homage. The tall bowl is quite muscular and stout, housing a generously deep chamber within its thick insulating walls and appears to be just shy of Oversized territory. The bowl's natural feel in hand in enhanced further thanks to the deep, slightly stretched transition which offers ample room for the thumb to comfortably drape over. There's some additional mass lent to the transition, matching well with the bowl's shaping and continuing through the rest of the shank which curves upward to meet the gracefully arching mouthpiece.
The finish and color palette Scottie chose for this piece couldn't be more perfect. Both further accentuate this pipe's traditional appeal, easily looking like it could have been produced 100 years ago. Thankfully it's a newer interpretation that benefits from Piersel's detail driven approach and expert engineering. It's been finished in a crisp sandblast, with seemingly endless waves of ripping ring grain climbing the bowl before meeting the smooth, beveled rim above which displays fine pin pricks of birdseye. Scottie's stems are often vibrant, but here she has gone for something a bit more reserved which suits the classic shaping and finish wonderfully, with the brindled vulcanite stem's deep green tones almost appearing to be jet-black vulcanite upon first glance. It's a subtle, yet welcomed addition to a composition that deftly showcases Scottie's stylistic range.- Jeffery Sitts
